The format leverages the saponin and phytoestrogen content of the seed, transferred into carrier oil via slow infusion. Modern haircare brands use it as a finished SKU or as an additive infusion in pre-shampoo treatments.
Why this ingredient for this application
Fenugreek contributes saponins (cleansing/conditioning), phytoestrogens (with some clinical interest in androgen-dependent hair loss), and a distinctive maple-curry scent (positioning depends on whether your brand wants that signature). Compared to chebe (which works mechanically on the hair shaft), fenugreek operates differently — it is more an active-ingredient infusion than a coating treatment.
Spec & inclusion
Cold infusion: 1:8 seed-to-oil ratio, jojoba or sweet almond carrier, 4–6 weeks at room temperature, agitate weekly. Warm infusion: 1:8 ratio, gentle heat (60–70°C) for 4–6 hours, strain. Final fenugreek-oil ratio in finished product: standalone oil format = 100% infusion; pre-shampoo treatment = 30–60% infusion blended with other carriers.
Formulation notes
Fenugreek saponins are mildly cleansing — the infused oil may foam slightly when rubbed in wet hair. Some customers love this; some find it confusing in an oil format. Test sensory with target customer before scaling. Scent profile is the most divisive variable: “warm maple” to enthusiasts, “curry” to skeptics. Add 2–5% lavender or rosemary essential oil to modulate.
