Why we developed Jet Cream
If you have ever used real Chébé powder the kind made from the actual Croton zambesicus seeds, cherry pit kernels, cloves, samour resin and lavender stone scent you already know its one downside. The smell. The very ingredients that protect Basara women’s hair for days at a time also leave behind a powerful, smoky, herbal aroma that doesn’t always blend with how Western users want to wear their hair.
Jet Cream is the answer the Chadian women themselves figured out a long time ago: a cream you mix into your Chebe routine to mask the scent and add manageability without losing any of the benefits. We make ours specifically for the people using our Chebe.
The traditional Chadian fix for an honest Chebe problem
The aroma of authentic Chebe powder is not a defect it is a feature. The volatile compounds released during roasting and grinding are part of why the powder has its characteristic preservative, antimicrobial, and protective properties. But they are also intense, herbal, and persistent. Among Chadian women who use Chebe daily, the traditional way of softening the scent is simple: blend the Chebe paste with a perfumed cream or pomade before applying it to the hair.
Jet Cream is the formalised, ready-to-use version of that traditional solution. We did not invent it. We adapted what was already being done by the women who use Chebe in their everyday lives and made it available to people outside Chad who want the benefits of authentic Chebe without committing to its full sensory experience.

Jet Cream is not a generic hair cream that we happen to sell alongside Chebe. It is formulated specifically as a companion product to our authentic Chebe powder the same powder we source directly from the Guéra Women’s Cooperative in central Chad, the same supply chain trusted by Design Essentials since 2022.
Used together in the traditional sequence Ambunu first to cleanse and detangle, Chebe powder mixed with oils and Jet Cream to coat the hair shaft, karkar oil to seal you get the complete Chadian haircare ritual, exactly the way the women of Chad have been performing it for generations. Jet Cream is the link that makes the powder pleasant enough for daily Western use.
How to use it with our Chebe
The traditional Chadian application sequence, adapted for Jet Cream:
- Cleanse and detangle with Ambunu leaves soaked in warm water until the mucilage forms.
- Mix the Chebe paste: in a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of Chebe powder with 2 tablespoons of your preferred oil (coconut, castor, argan), then add a generous knob of Jet Cream. Mix until you obtain a smooth, fragrant cream.
- Apply to damp hair, mid-length to ends only never on the scalp.
- Braid the hair in protective sections and leave the mixture in for 1–3 days, depending on your routine. The Jet Cream prevents the Chebe scent from dominating, while the powder does its protective work on the hair shaft.
- Rinse thoroughly when ready to wash. The hair should feel softer, more manageable, and noticeably less prone to breakage.
This routine, adapted weekly or bi-weekly, is what allows Chebe users to maintain length retention without committing to a permanent fragrance change.
