Direct from Burkina Faso · No middlemen

Why our Shea Butter comes from Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso, with neighbouring Ghana, produces between 60% and 75% of the world’s Shea kernel supply. But raw production is one thing. Real artisanal Shea butter hand-churned by women using methods passed down for generations is another. That is what we ship from Cotonou.

Our Shea is sourced directly from women’s cooperatives in Burkina Faso. No European intermediaries, no industrial refineries. The butter you receive is the butter the women themselves produced, in the form they have been producing it for centuries.

“The gold of women” a tradition older than the country itself

In West Africa, Shea butter is called or des femmes “the gold of women.” The reason is simple: from collection to final processing, the entire Shea value chain is handled by women, and has been for as long as anyone can remember. Across the Sahelian belt, the Shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) grows wild and is protected even on cultivated land, because of the income it generates for households.

The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that at least 646,000 households in Burkina Faso are involved in collecting Shea nuts. For many rural Burkinabé women, Shea production is not a side activity it is one of the few sources of independent cash income available, and a foundation of household economic security.

The harvest itself runs from May to August. Women rise before dawn to collect the fallen Shea fruits under the trees, before the heat of the day and before competition from other gatherers. The fruit pulp is removed, the nuts are washed, then dried, roasted, crushed, and slowly kneaded with water until the butter separates and rises. The whole process can take days. There is no shortcut.

The Burkinabé method: dry and fermented, not industrial

There is a meaningful difference between the Shea butter you can buy from large industrial processors and what you receive from us. Most supermarket Shea butter is solvent-extracted, deodorised, bleached, and stripped of the unsaponifiables that give the butter its therapeutic value. The result is white, odourless, neutral and largely inert.

The traditional Burkinabé method is different. Because water is scarce in much of Burkina Faso, women here favour dry treatment or fermentation followed by boiling a different processing tradition than in Ghana. The kernels are sun-dried, sometimes lightly fermented, then roasted and stone-ground before being kneaded by hand. The butter that emerges is yellow to ivory in colour, naturally fragrant, and rich in the vitamins (A, E, F) and essential fatty acids that make Shea butter genuinely useful for skin and hair.

This is what “unrefined” actually means. It is not a marketing claim it is a method.

Our partners: women’s cooperatives in Burkina Faso

We work directly with women’s cooperatives in Burkina Faso the same kind of grassroots organizations that the FAO has documented as serving over 1,000 registered groups across the country, gathering more than 646,000 collector households. These cooperatives are not just production units. They are social structures.

For Burkinabé women in patriarchal rural communities, Shea cooperatives are often the only space where they can earn independent income, learn new skills, share information freely, and speak openly with women from outside their household. The FAO has called these groups one of the few “social services for Burkinabé women” in much of the country.

By buying from us, you buy from these women. We pay before the butter leaves Burkina Faso. We do not deduct fictitious “processing fees.” And a portion of every order contributes to the broader humanitarian work Essential Care Plus funds in our partner communities water access, school renovations, and healthcare for community members identified by traditional chiefs as needing help.

What real Burkinabé Shea butter gives you

Most “African Shea butter” sold online has been processed in Europe or Asia. Ours hasn’t. The butter you receive is the butter the women in Burkina Faso made packed, certified, and shipped to you from Cotonou, Bénin via DHL Express.

  • Genuinely unrefined. Yellow to ivory in colour, naturally fragrant. If your Shea butter is bone-white and odourless, it has been refined ours has not.
  • Hand-churned by women in Burkina Faso, using the dry/fermented method specific to the Sahelian belt. No solvent extraction. No bleaching.
  • Rich in vitamins A, E, and F, plus essential fatty acids and unsaponifiables the components that give Shea its real moisturising and barrier-repair properties.
  • Phytosanitary certificate issued for every export shipment, as required by international plant-product regulation.
  • Direct from the women who made it. No European broker. No relabelling. The supply chain ends with the cooperative, not with a processor.
  • A purchase that gives back. Each order contributes to water access, education, and healthcare initiatives in our partner communities.
