Why our Turmeric comes from West Africa

Turmeric is not native to Africa. It originated in South Asia. But over the last twelve centuries, it has become so deeply integrated into African cuisines, traditional medicines, and dyeing traditions that the continent is now one of the world’s emerging exporters of high-quality turmeric. We source ours through the West African producer network, hand-picked rhizomes processed in the traditional way.

This matters because the global turmeric market has a serious quality problem. According to peer-reviewed research published in Foods (PMC), about 11% of turmeric imports into the European Union are adulterated cut with cheap fillers like cassava starch, lead chromate, or banned azo dyes (Sudan dye, metanil yellow). Single-origin, traceable turmeric is genuinely difficult to find. Ours is.

From the Vedic culture of India to the markets of West Africa

Curcuma longa, the rhizomatous perennial of the ginger family Zingiberaceae, has been used in India for at least 4,000 years. Sanskrit medical treatises and the Ayurvedic and Unani systems documented its uses long before written history reached West Africa. According to academic histories of the spice trade, turmeric reached East Africa by around 800 AD and West Africa by around 1200 AD, well before Marco Polo described it in 1280 as “saffron from India.”

By the time European colonisers arrived, turmeric was already woven into West and East African cuisines and traditional pharmacopeia. Today it is grown commercially in Tanzania, Nigeria, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and several West African countries. The continent’s tropical climate hot days, regular rainfall, fertile soils happens to suit the crop almost as well as its native South Asia.

Why the African market for turmeric is growing and why that matters for quality

The very reason African turmeric exports are growing is the quality problem in the dominant Asian supply chains. With 11% of EU imports failing adulteration tests, large processors and ingredient buyers have started looking for cleaner sources. African producers who farm at smaller scale, with less industrial processing infrastructure have ended up offering exactly the traceability and integrity that the larger producers struggle to deliver.

Our turmeric is sourced through this West African producer network. The rhizomes are boiled, sun-dried, then stone-ground rather than steam-extruded. That is the traditional method, and it preserves the curcuminoids curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin which are the active polyphenols responsible for both turmeric’s deep golden colour and its measurable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

What you will not find in our turmeric: synthetic colorants, lead chromate, azo dyes, starch fillers, or sawdust. What you will find: real Curcuma longa with the deep ochre colour and warm aroma that real turmeric is supposed to have.

What turmeric does and what it does not

Modern peer-reviewed research has confirmed several of turmeric’s traditional uses. The curcuminoids show documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity in clinical and pre-clinical studies. They are being investigated for applications in joint health, digestive support, and skin care. The chemistry is real.

What turmeric is not is a miracle cure, and we will not market it as one. The active curcuminoids have poor oral bioavailability on their own which is why traditional African and Indian preparations almost always combine turmeric with fat (oil, ghee, milk) and black pepper, both of which dramatically improve absorption. The traditional knowledge, in this case, is exactly aligned with the modern pharmacology.

What real, traceable West African turmeric gives you

  • Single-origin from West African producer regions, not generic commodity-grade powder mixed from multiple unverifiable sources.
  • Traditional processing boiled, sun-dried, stone-ground. No solvent extraction, no synthetic colorants, no fillers.
  • Full curcuminoid profile preserved deep golden-orange colour, warm aroma, real flavour intensity.
  • No adulteration. We source through trusted producer relationships, not anonymous commodity exchanges where adulteration affects 11% of imports.
  • Versatile. Curries, stews, teas, golden milk, marinades, fermented pickles, traditional health preparations, and natural skin care formulations.
  • Phytosanitary certificate issued for every export shipment, as required by international plant-product regulation.
  • A purchase that gives back. Each order contributes to community development work in our partner regions across West Africa.
